Meeting my lofty expectations

I’ve had really high expectations for the loft. It has taken a long time, but we are finally closing in on finishing the loft. The biggest thing remaining was the doors, which were completed over the past week.

There is a lot of storage on each side with living space, a small bathroom, and closet in the middle. I wanted a bathroom on the second floor and it is super tiny but cute. It’s about eight and a half feet long by three and a half feet wide. The toilet is right in front of the “barn style door.” There is a 32-inch square shower on the left and a sink the width of the bathroom on the right. It’s so tiny, but I truly love it. There is tongue and groove pine on the walls and bamboo on the floor.

I bought the rails and hinges for the doors and my talented Dad built the three doors that are in the loft. There is one on the bathroom and two on the closet. I absolutely love the doors. When I first began looking at Pinterest I found that “barn style doors” were in and fell in love with them.

The closet is built right into the wall with the back open for storage. I’ve been amazed by how much I have been able to store behind the closet and bathroom. The closet is huge and gives me plenty of room for all my clothes. I keep saying that I need to donate some as I have way too many.

This snowy day gave me a great opportunity to finish staining the front wall of the closet, the doors, and the woodwork around the windows. I also got some curtains up on the back window. When you live in the middle of the woods, curtains don’t have to be your top priority.

There is just a little trim work remaining in the loft, and we still have to build a small “hidden” door for above the bathroom. We wanted to have a way to get to the wiring in the ceiling if need be.

Overall, the loft completely meets my lofty expectations that I had for this space.

About Laura Reed

After 15 years in college athletics, the last seven as an assistant athletics director, I was burned out with 70-hour work weeks and extensive travel. I resigned my position and accepted a position in marketing at a small, vibrant college in my hometown of Unity, Maine. In the process I wanted to go back to my childhood where we raised polled Herefords, had a Christmas Tree Farm and spent many hours outside. I decided I wanted to build my own home on beautiful farmland that my family owns. With help from my Dad, the most talented person I’ve ever met, we are building my home together. I have decided to blog my experience – the ups and downs, the joys and frustrations. What was once an open field will one day be my home! The dream in my head is becoming reality. I can just see the lambs frolicking in the field, chickens in the barnyard and going running with my Alaskan Malamute!
