It’s safe to say that the last month things have not gone as predicted. We had planned to spend a lot of time on the house, but due to my Dad’s surgery, have not done anything on the house. Today was moving day which presented a big dilemma. Where am I moving to?
Things are still on schedule to close on my old house on Aug. 24. Today worked well for my family to help me move, so midweek I reserved a U-Haul truck, and plans were set in motion. I made one trip to the house midweek to pack some additional stuff, and move all that I could into my living room.
Friday night I went home to my townhouse for the last time. I’m so excited about my new house, but it was a tad bittersweet. This was the first house that I bought. I took apart my bed and moved it to the first floor. With just a mattress on my floor, I slept in my house one last night.
Morning came too soon, and I was up and getting as much ready as possible. I picked up the U-Haul at 8 a.m., and I was a bit terrified driving it out of the parking lot. I’ve never driven a truck quite like that before. It was parked so close to the truck beside it that it took me three attempts to finally back out.
I got the U-Haul to my house and my parents, sister and her family, and my aunt arrived shortly thereafter. My Dad is still limited and not allow to lift anything, so his main job was watching my 3-year-old nephew. We weren’t really sure that everything was going to fit, but where there’s a will there’s a way. We packed the truck and then put the rest in my parent’s van and my sister’s Honda Pilot. I did not want to drive from Old Town to Unity alone, so I convinced my sister to ride with me. I have to admit, it was a pretty fun trip. Typically, you don’t see two women in a U-Haul.
So, where were we going to take my stuff? For the past month, I’ve been bringing car loads to Unity. My parents have cleaned out a room in their house for me to put stuff in. That room is full! Midweek we enclosed one of the rooms in the new house with plastic and decided to put as much stuff as we could in that room. The majority of it fit well. My brother-in-law was an amazing help. Thanks Kevin!
We actually ended up putting my bed and dresser up in the loft. We still have so much to do in the house, but decided that it was better to put the majority of my stuff there and move it around vs. renting a storage unit for a month or two. I was so tempted to camp out in the new house tonight and just sleep on my mattress on the floor. I’m a huge Chicago Cubs fan and they played at 8 p.m., so I really wanted to stay where I had internet and could listen to the game so I ended up staying at my parent’s house. I can’t wait to spend my first night at the new house.
I will be staying with my parents full-time for the next month or so. Without having to drive to Old Town, I will be able to spend more nights and weekends working on the house. Today was indeed a big step in the process.
